The M03 has three main sections: the centrifugal compressor, the combustion chamber, and the gas generator turbine. The centrifugal compressor provides the compressed air which is required for combustion. This component is supercharged by the axial compressor (M02) and ensures the second stage of compression. This component is also located at the front of the engine, directly behind the M02. This is the furthest forward part of the M03. The second part of the M03 is the combustion chamber. This component forms an enclosure in which the air/fuel mixture is burnt. This is the central section of the gas generator. In the combustion chamber, the compressed air is divided into 2 flows: the primary air flow which is mixed with fuel for combustion, and the secondary (or dilution air flow) which is used for cooling the resultant gas from the combustion. The turbine extracts energy from the gas flow to drive compressors and accessories. This is located at the rear of the gas generator. It functions by funnelling the gas provided by the combustion chamber through nozzle guide vanes. These passages are convergent, so they further accelerate the velocity of the incoming gas, and direct the gas towards the turbine, which due to aerodynamic forces will spin. This generates power. The gas is further then directed towards the power turbine (M04).
